WTS - Vision & Mission

Our Vision

We envision a thriving and connected Tamil community in Wellington, where our language, culture, traditions and values continue to flourish across generations. We aspire to a future where our Tamil heritage remains a meaningful part of our everyday lives, shaping our identity, strengthening our relationships and connecting us to the generations who came before us.

For many of us growing up in New Zealand, our Tamil identity is shaped by the balance between the country we call home and the heritage we inherit from our families. We believe these identities can complement one another, allowing us to embrace life in New Zealand while remaining proud of our Sri Lankan Tamil roots. Our vision is to create a community where every generation feels a sense of belonging, understands the significance of its heritage and has the opportunity to experience and celebrate its culture.

Above all, we aspire to ensure that Tamil culture is not simply remembered as part of our history, but continues to be lived, shared and celebrated well into the future. We want our children and grandchildren to inherit more than stories of the past; we want them to have the knowledge, experiences and connections needed to carry our traditions forward with pride. Through a strong and united community, we hope to preserve our heritage while allowing it to grow and evolve with each new generation.

Our Mission

The Wellington Tamil Society is committed to bringing the Tamil community together, celebrating our Sri Lankan Tamil heritage and creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect with their culture, identity and one another. Since our establishment in 1983, our community has provided a place for Tamil families and individuals to maintain their cultural connections while building their lives in Wellington, New Zealand. We seek to continue this legacy by fostering a welcoming, inclusive and vibrant community for generations to come.

We aim to preserve and promote our heritage through cultural celebrations, language, music, dance, the arts, sport and community activities. These experiences provide opportunities to practise our traditions, share our stories and pass on the values that have shaped our community. By creating spaces where culture can be experienced firsthand, we hope to make our heritage accessible and relevant to younger generations, ensuring that they can develop a genuine connection to their Tamil identity.

We recognise that preserving our culture is a shared responsibility between generations. We strive to bring together those who have carried our traditions throughout their lives and those who are discovering their heritage for the first time. By encouraging participation, volunteering, leadership and intergenerational connection, we aim to empower our community to take ownership of its cultural future and contribute to the continued growth of the Society.

We are equally committed to strengthening our place within the wider Wellington community. By sharing our culture, building meaningful relationships and contributing to New Zealand's diverse society, we aim to foster mutual understanding and appreciation while remaining grounded in our heritage. We believe that a strong cultural identity enriches not only our own community but also the society in which we live.

Ultimately, our mission is to ensure that the work of previous generations continues to create opportunities for those who follow. Through collective effort, community spirit and a shared commitment to our heritage, we strive to keep Tamil culture alive in Wellington, allowing it to be celebrated today, carried forward tomorrow and cherished for generations to come.
