2018 கணக்கெடுப்பின்படி  தமிழ்மொழி நியூசிலாந்தில் 10107 மக்களால் பேசப்பட்டு நியூசிலாந்தில் பேசப்படும் முதல் 25 மொழிகளில் ஒன்றாக இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. (Top 25 Languages in New Zealand | Ministry for Ethnic Communities  ) 

தமிழ் மொழி பேசும் மக்கள் இந்தியா, இலங்கை, சிங்கப்பூர், மலேசியா, தென் ஆபிரிக்கா ஆகிய பல நாடுகளில் இருந்து வந்து குடியேறியுள்ளனர். 

கடற் பயணித்திலும் வணிகத்திலும் தேர்ந்த, 14ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு காலப்பகுதியில் வடஆஸ்திரேலியாவை அடைந்த தமிழர் நியூசிலாந்துக்கும் வந்திருக்கலாம் என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. நியூசிலாந்தில் Whangarei என்னும் இடத்தில் வில்லியம் கொலென்சோவால் கண்டெடுக்கப்பட்ட 500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் பழைமையான தமிழ் எழுத்துகள் பொறித்த மணி இதற்கு சான்று பகர்வதாக அமைந்தாலும் பின்னைய ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் இது ஐரோப்பியரால் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என்றே உரைக்கின்றனர். எவ்வாறாயினும் தமிழருக்கும் மவூரி சமூகத்தின் முன்னோர்களுக்கும் ஏதோ ஒரு தொடர்பு இருப்பதை வலுவாக நம்பக்கூடியதாக உள்ளது. இதைக் கருதுகோளாகக் கொண்டு மேலும் ஆராய்ச்சிகளை மேற்கொள்ளுவது பல உண்மைகளை வெளிக்கொணரலாம்.
